They were trying to get rid of tobacco and porn when I was in the military. When I was in boot camp (1986), they banned tobacco sales in the Px. Then, there was a point in time (1988) when the chaplain of my command convinced the CO to outlaw porn for all people in the command. That didn't last long. There were guys making a lot of money selling magazines and cigarettes.

At one point, smokes were selling for $2 a cigarette, hustler was selling for $20 (cover price was $4). A carton sent to you by family cost $25 including shipping, and could be sold for $400. That is why the war on drugs doesn't work.

I was in Vietnam when the bureaucrats decided that smoking was bad for you, and pulled the little 5-packs of smokes out of the C-Rations. The life expectancy of an M-60 machine-gunner in a firefight was about 5 minutes, and the Pentagon weenies were worried about lung cancer at 60? The cigarettes kept the mosquitoes off, and could be used to burn off leaches, too. If you didn't smoke (I didn't.) you could trade your cigarettes for someone else's fruit cocktail or peaches. Can we just, please, focus on winning and/or killing the Taliban and Al Quaida leadership and getting the hell out instead of playing politically-correct games with military personnel's personal and voluntary vices?

Don't withhold the cigarettes and no one will get nicotine fits.
Problem solved! Whichever nanny-state agency thought this one up should STFU and stick to arguing about the color to paint the lobby.

This is a proposal of one of the more nanny-ish departments, not of the Pentagon. The Pentagon has announced that it will not forbid soldiers to smoke! I heard both in the same newscast.
