Tea Party Killjoy

An overly-officious ankle-biter in Burleson, TX is attempting to put the kibosh on that town’s April 15th Tea Party…

Mr. Gonzales told organizers that he is on a special events staff, which is under the city manager’s office in Burleson. Gonzales explained to one local organizer that the special events staff had decided this protest was “not in the public interest.” He is telling organizers that David Wynn, the city manager, is his boss, and could overturn this decision. For the record, the city manager’s office told local organizers that they do not need a permit to demonstrate in Burleson, and they are not saying that the organizers need one now.

I, personally, think Mr. Gonzales (and his special events staff cohorts) would be much better suited to careers in the Scraping Shite From Between the Toes of Elephants industry.  How ’bout you Texasians get that point across to them, eh?

So, wait a second… Gonzales has already been overruled, and then he goes and decides to be unnecessarily officiating and try and change the rules, when someone higher up the chain has already set the law?

Yeah, bugger that. Some locals need to drop off a crate of large-print Constitutions on his doorstep (and possibly a few Constitutions-on-tape), since this guy obvsiously does not get how the system works.

    Sir –

The First Amendment says restricting peaceable demonstration is not in the public interest.

    Please review high school civics.

Okay, just dropped this one on them:

    Sirs –

    The First Amendment:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

An interesting article can be found on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

I suggest your city employees might find it a useful review.

    Yours sincerely,

    Charles R Martin

From an update at the original post, it looks as though the Tea Party will go off as planned, with the city’s blessing (for whatever that is worth).
