Sooo, what’d you think of Col. Tigh’s McCain’s speech? Sincere? Inspiring? If you were on the fence about him before are you now convinced?
What? What do *I* think? Erm…
I didn’t watch it.
Yeah, that’s what I said, I didn’t watch it.
*sigh*
I don’t like him, ok? I don’t like him and I don’t trust him. I’m going to vote for him, yeah, because he’s the best of a horrific range of choices (and thanks for that, Fred!), but I’m not particularly happy about it. How about you folks?

I have the same problems with Maverick which you have expressed, and the same view of the alternatives. Recently, I have “grown” in that I will now be voting for Maverick-Saracudda with my fingers crossed, but not with a clothespin on my nose. If we work hard, we can keep him on the right track in other areas where he has proved weak. And should he elect to serve only one term, 2012 may bring us a Palin-Jindal ticket.

@Tregonsee:
That is SO Ted’s fantasy ticket right now.

I wish it were Romney or Thompson instead of McCain. However…if we had Romney or Thompson, we would not have Palin. We can what if ourselves to death, but I really think the current ticket has created more enthusiasm than any other could.
Since we have McCain or the other guy, we need to vote for McCain. God forbid the other guy wins. I wonder, though, how much input Palin will have on strategy and policy. If McCain is smart, he will be sure she is included.

John C has a point. It’s obvious from the way this year’s GOP presidential contest went that the conservative wing is in desperate need of new blood. Sarah! can be the start of the renewal the party needs.
If McCain is smart, he will be sure she is included.
I’m thinking even if McCain tries to freeze her out she’ll surprise him. I don’t think Obama’s the only presidential nominee who may be underestimating her.

…the conservative wing is in desperate need of new blood.
One of the big radio guys (might have been Rush, but not sure now) mentioned something along those lines, referring to Palin and Jindal, among a few others. (I was driving and wasn’t paying that close attention to the radio.) The rationale had to do with the new generation of conservatives who are not happy with the current trend in the Republican party and are out to make some changes.
I think that is true. It helps that these people are young, intelligent, accomplished and not stuck in the current corrupt political network. People see them as honest, hard-working, sincere and one of them, a person to rally around and defend when the establishment tries to take them down.
The only thing I worry about is that the lure of career politics will end up corrupting them.

There’s a way to address that: term limits.
You don’t send in firefighters and expect them to stay in the inferno for hours on end until it’s out — you bring them out every so often to breathe the fresh air and regain their bearings while rotating in a fresh crew.
Politicians need that too, whether they want it or not.
