Quadruple Standard

Er, what?

Local media reports say a governor in northern Saudi Arabia has ordered authorities to punish men who flirt with women in public places by cutting their hair.

Several Saudi newspapers, including Al Hayat, say Prince Fahd bin Badr ordered police Sunday to carry out the punishment after seeing a group of men with long hair pestering female students as they left school in the town of Skaka.

Oh yes, THAT will surely teach them.

Sure you don’t want to arrest them instead?  Or maybe a nice public lashing in the town square?

Afwan ya’akh…the accused, they have penises!

Hot damn, Abdul, you are so right!  Release them immediately!

They are SO very lucky I do not rule the world.

I don’t know if they actually get “arrested” or not, but I do know that one of the young men my DH works with, who is a “local,” spent a night or two in jail before getting his head shaved for flirting with girls at a local mall.

The legal system in SA is a bit different than in the States [that's an UNDERSTATEMENT]; whereas here if you have committed some infraction – provided you aren’t a local – then you are automatically guilty until proven guilty [almost everyone "confesses" to crimes - but no one can seem to figure out how the authorities get the confessions... highly unlikely any coercion or force would be utilized to obtain a confession... {sarc/off}].

Thanks, BT. I used to live in SA, my father found first hand the “guilty until proven innocent” routine when involved in a fender bender with a local. Took the sodding US Consulate to get him out of jail.

    Not to mention vice versa.

Still, this does appear to hold the actual offender responsible for the “offense” — an enormous step forward in Saudi gender law!

Or have I missed something yet again? [*sigh*]
