		<description>The quote may have been borne from his second novel, but I think he carried that idea through many of his later novels.  He also carried the idea that a society that has the attitude that the people in general have no obligation to work for and protect a society is one that is sick and dying.

The influence of his Navy days is obvious in his works, and not just in his knowledge of ship and military operations.</description>
