A Government of Laws, and Not of Men

Is everyone watching the John Adams mini-series on HBO? What do we all think thusfar? Ted and I only just started part 1 last night, so no spoilers! (Hah, I R funneee.)

I haven’t read the biography, though it is one I usually touch every time we enter a bookstore. Should I get this now? No, you have nineteen things at home that need reading first. </inner monologue> I’d be interested to hear a contrast/compare between the book/mini-series from those who’ve sampled both.

Poking about online this morning, reading Abigail’s wiki bio, I came across this collection of her letters, to John and others. Amazing how erudite one can become on home-schooling, eh? As interesting as they are to read, I’d rather have both sides of the conversation, and Amazon provides:

And that most helpfully leads me to John Adams’ political writings:

Which in turn leads me to a collection of Thomas Jefferson’s correspondence with John Adams:

And after that, Thomas Jefferson’s correspondence with James Madison:

And…and…and… AUGH! Do you suppose I could get away with just cutting out sleep entirely? That’s like 7 hours of time right there that could be used for reading…

You need to get Irving Stone’s “Those Who Love” written in 1965 it got me interested in how all of the people involved in the process lived and the sacrifices they made.

John Adams is my favorite person from that time.

I am next on the reading list as soon as I pester my brother to finish the letters of John and Abigail Adams book. He, the brother, says it is quite good.

The local library has rescued me often when the book budget has gone bust. I can even reserve the books rather than haunt the stacks to see if a specific book is available. Since this is the public library I’m talking about, I imagine yours offers similar service. Oh, and I can renew on-line, too.

Oddly enough we are right back at the begining with a de facto government of men, not of laws.

I was just thinking that last night, Gregg, whilst watching part 2. Adams has to be spinning in his grave like a high-speed lathe.
